Moonshot, powering Belgium’s edge cloud future

A6 K Moonshot 290626

June 29, 2026 - More than 250 participants gathered at Moonshot, the event co-organized by Proximus & A6K, to explore one of the biggest transformations currently reshaping industry, the move from centralized cloud computing to distributed edge intelligence.

Far beyond a technology showcase, Moonshot brought together entrepreneurs, researchers, industry leaders and public decision-makers around a shared question.

How do we bring intelligence closer to where the action happens?

AI is moving beyond the cloud

Artificial Intelligence is no longer confined to chatbots or office applications. It is increasingly becoming part of industrial processes, autonomous systems, connected infrastructure and critical services.

As these technologies move into the physical world, waiting for data to travel back and forth to distant data centres is no longer always an option. Tomorrow's applications will require decisions to be made locally, securely and in real time.

This is precisely the vision behind Moonshot.

Proximus network is your computer

Presented by Proximus CEO Stijn Bijnens, Moonshot explores an ambitious vision, turning Belgium's digital infrastructure into a distributed edge cloud.

Instead of concentrating computing power in a handful of central data centres, intelligence moves closer to where decisions need to be taken. The benefits go far beyond lower latency. Distributed edge infrastructure also strengthens resilience, supports digital sovereignty and enables new generations of AI-powered applications.

From ideas to real-world applications

The day began with an ideation hackathon where participants imagined concrete use cases for edge computing across five strategic sectors, defense, transport & mobility, utilities, healthcare, and media & immersive experiences. The strongest concepts will continue into a development phase, with the opportunity to be tested on Proximus' future edge cloud infrastructure.

More than discussing technology, the objective was to solve real operational challenges with solutions that create measurable impact.

Strategic opportunity for Belgium

The afternoon keynote brought together leading voices from government and industry, including Eléonore Simonet, Federal Minister of the Middle Class, the Self-Employed and SMEs, Thomas Dermine, Charleroi Mayor and Stijn Bijnens, CEO, Proximus.

Despite approaching the topic from different perspectives, they all converged on the same idea. Belgium has a unique opportunity to strengthen its competitiveness by combining AI, digital infrastructure and collaborative innovation.

Moonshot demonstrated that this transformation is not only about technology. It is about building an ecosystem where public institutions, industry, defense stakeholders, entrepreneurs and researchers work together to turn bold ideas into concrete solutions.

Looking ahead

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way industries operate, but its future will depend on more than increasingly powerful models.

It will depend on where intelligence runs, how quickly it reacts and how securely it can support real-world operations.

Moonshot offered a glimpse of that future, and showed that Belgium has both the ambition and the ecosystem to help build it.
